GRACIE'S CAFETERIA HAS BEEN SETTING HERE ON THE MIDWAY FOR DECADES. NOW OPERATORS ARE HAVING TO MAKE MAJOR CHANGES. DAVE HIGGINBOTTOM/VE NDOR: WELL WE ARE GOING TO FIND OUT OBVIOUSLY OUR SEATING IS GOING TO BE LIMITED ...WE ARE GOING TO HAVE SOCIAL DISTANCING WITH THE SEATING..SO THE TABLES WILL BE 6 FEET APART. VENDORS AND RIDE OPERATORS WILL HAVE TO WEAR MASKS BUT THE AG COMMISSIONER SAYS PATRONS WILL NOT BE REQUIRED. ANDY GIPSON/AG COMMISSIONER: WHAT WE TELL PEOPLE IS LOOK BRING A MASK IN CASE THEY CAN'T STAY SOCIALLY DISTANCED 6 FEET AWAY, IF THEY GET NEXT TO SOMEONE ON A RIDE AND THEY DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE WE SAW PUT IT ON. WE TELL PEOPLE COME ON BRING YOUR MASK AND IF YOU DON'T HAVE ONE WE WILL HAVE ONE TO GIVE YOU AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE FAIR. GIPSON SAYS THERE ARE RESTRICTIONS TO THE INDOOR EVENTS, THE AG AREAS WILL BE RESTRICTED. THE RIDES....WILL BE UNDE STRICT SANITATION REQUIREMENTS. ANDY GIPSON/AG COMMISSIONER: EVERY RIDE WILL BE SANITIZED IN BETWEEN EVERYONE OF THE RIDES, SO EVERY SOMEONE SITS WITH HIGH TOUCH AREAS WE WIPE DOWN.IN ADDITION TO THAT THERE ARE SOME HIGH TECH MISTING MACHINES THESE RIDES WILL BE MISTED TWICE A DAY WITH SOME DISINFECTANT THAT WILL KILL ANY GERM. THE PLAN TO KEEP COUNT ....ONLY 200 PEOPLE PER ACRE...A MAX OF ABOUT 20- THOUSAND TOTAL AT ANY ONE TIME. Gipson said it's an outdoor event and the governor's recent executive order means fairgoers will not be required to wear them. Vendors and workers will wear masks."What we tell people is, bring a mask in case they can't stay socially distanced 6 feet away. If they get next to someone on a ride and they don't feel comfortable, we say put it on," Gipson said. "We tell people, 'Come on, bring your mask. And if you don't have one, we will have one to give you at the entrance to the fair.'"Malone's Taffy is a fair staple. They were setting up Monday in preparation for this year's kickoff. Chandra D'avy said it's going to be weird in some respects because of the pandemic."The mask and gloves, trying to do the candy and the wrappers, and it's just going to be a lot different," D'avy said.For many of the traveling vendors, Mississippi is one of the few state fairs where they have been able to get back to work. The pandemic forced many to cancel for this year."The social distancing is going to be the big thing, and we are going to see how it goes," says vendor Dave Higginbottom.Gipson said fair officials will keep count of the number of fairgoers and limit it to 200 people per acre, for a maximum of 20,000 at any one time.Gracie's Cafeteria has been on the Midway for decades, but now they're making major changes."Our seating is going to be limited, we are going to have social distancing with the seating, so the tables will be 6 feet apart," Higginbottom said.Gipson said there are restrictions to the indoor events, including the agriculture areas, and the rides will be under strict sanitation requirements."Every ride will be sanitized in between every one of the rides," Gipson said. "High-touch areas we wipe down, in addition to that, there are some high-tech misting machines. These rides will be misted twice a day with some disinfectant that will kill any germ."Fair operators said those with health risks may want to stay home this year.
