WHEN THE TROOPER REPORTEDLY ASKED IF HE COULD HELP, THE MAN YELLED AT HIM. INVESTIGATORS SAY THE TROOPER THEN SAW THE MAN HAD A HATCHET IN HIS HAND. WHEN THE TROOPER TRIED TO SH THE DOOR, THE MAN REPORTEDL SWUNG THE HATCHET, SCRATCHING THE TROOPER’S HAND. INVESTIGATORS SAY THE MAN AND THE DOG LEFT AND TROOPERS HEARD THE MAN HOWLING FROM THE NEARBY WOODLINE THE CHURCH MEMBERS WERE EVENTUALLY ABLE TO LEAVE. The off-duty trooper asked if he could help and the man reportedly then yelled at the trooper.While talking to the man, the trooper noticed he was holding a hatchet. As the trooper attempted to close the door, the man swung the hatchet and hit the back of the trooper's hand, reports say."The trooper was able to close the door and directed the members of the congregation to immediately go to the church basement for their safety," authorities said.The man and his dog then left the property and the off-duty trooper assisted everyone to their vehicles. The trooper could hear the man yelling and howling from the woodline, reports say. "State police resources responded to the scene to search for the male subject who is described as a white male in his 30s with long, brown hair. He is approximately 5 feet, 10 inches in height and of medium build. He was wearing a backpack and was accompanied by a small, black, collie-mix dog.
