CRITIC REVIEWS
Science Misrepresented
February 12, 2019
It is irresponsible to write an article about extreme weather without mentioning climate change. Scientists have reported for several years that harsh winters are a sign of climate change (https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/earthtalks-global-warming-harsher-winter/ & https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/2019/01/climate-change-colder-winters-global-warming-polar-vortex/ for example).
As an outlet, CNN has a history of ignoring climate change in their reporting on extreme weather: https://www.mediamatters.org/blog/2018/09/24/National-TV-news-is-still-failing-to-properly-incorporate-climate-change-into-hurricane-co/221423
Indeed, CNN is a safe space for climate deniers - featuring the likes of former Senator Rick Santorum who while in office received hundreds of thousands in campaign contributions from fossil fuels and claimed on air that climate scientists only claim climate change is happening because they're paid to. Oh, irony.
While the surface contents of this article are accurate, i.e. school closures, statements from politicians, etc., the omission of cause is a serious journalistic mistake. As if reporting on a plane crash but not explaining why the plane crashed when that information is readily available elsewhere. The mistake is made ever more serious, however, when you consider the global effects of climate change and the thriving industries driving that climate change who stay safe behind a corporate media silence.
