You may opt-out by&nbsp;Sep 22, 2020,New!Got it!Jared Kushner owed money to a bank with ties to Taiwan's government while working at the White House, according to a new book by Forbes' senior editor Dan Alexander, , signaling a possible conflict that was never reported due to a loophole in disclosure laws and one that could have implications for the country's diplomatic relationships with Taiwan and China.Kushner and his partners bought an old warehouse in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, called the Austin Nichols House in 2015 for a reported $275 million and turned it into a luxury condo building. &nbsp;The deal&nbsp;came with&nbsp;a $175 million mortgage on the property held by Kushner and his partners; a 2017 split left a bank called Mega International Commercial Bank with $50 million of the loan, according to financial documents reviewed by Alexander.&nbsp;The parent organization of Mega International Commercial Bank, Mega Financial Holding Company, is 26% owned by government entities in Taiwan, Alexander reports, and most of its board members are from Taiwan’s ministry of finance.This means that an overseas bank with ties to Taiwan’s government held a bit of leverage over one of the president’s top advisers and family members — and nothing was known about it until now.&nbsp;Kushner holds a relatively small stake in the Austin Nichols deal — about $1 million — but he was able to dodge reporting the lending structure on the deal when he went to work in the White House because officials do not have to list liabilities on their financial disclosure reports if those liabilities are held by companies they own, rather than held by them personally.Representatives for Jared Kushner and the Kushner Companies did not respond to Alexander’s multiple requests for comment.The loan documents specifically name Kushner as one of the two guarantors of the debt.The Trump administration has to strengthen its relationship with Taiwan and its standing on the international stage as a counter to China.
