Another day, another leak to the press that the Government is to combat the recent uptick in Covid-19 cases. With localised lockdowns accumulating like constellations across the country, the fantasy of geo-targeted crackdowns&nbsp;is fading into a return to nationwide restrictions.The so-called proposed “circuit break” is intended to push the pause button on the virus’ circulation to buy more time once again. But more time for what, exactly?We were told in previous proclamations that restrictions&nbsp;were temporary, yet vital, to .&nbsp;The Nightingale hospitals were unveiled, quickly to be mothballed as it was realised the near total cessation of all other frontline health services had left many hospitals eerily quiet.Yet despite positive cases rising as we test more and more people for antigens, hospitalisations remain&nbsp;manageable. This undermines&nbsp;the Government’s former narrative that drastic measures to ‘squash the sombrero’ are vital to alleviate an untenable burden on the health service.Every day that we continue this pantomime of trying to sweep a virus under the carpet simply prolongs the process of what epidemiologists know to be the organic denouement of this sorry story; (let us skilfully sidestep the now taboo term ‘herd’) developed either through natural infection or the advent of a vaccine to stimulate faux-infection until the virus reaches a critical mass and is unable to leap from host to host, forging collective resilience.&nbsp;Every day of avoiding this reality is another day added to the nightmarish pillaging of everything we as human beings require as a social animal; gainful employ, self sufficiency and social engagement.The obsessive focus of the powers that be is locked on the undulating metrics of a grim but rarely deadly disease which preys&nbsp;on the vulnerable, not least in care homes.&nbsp;– one of the only countries in Europe spared a novel surge having adopted a non WHO-compliant approach of courting herd immunity – suggests that&nbsp;there is an alternative strategy, which would enable us to end this continued social and economic ransacking of our lives.As the Government scampers to justify pulling up the handbrake yet again, with immeasurable and untold lasting for generations to come, perhaps it is time we challenged them on whether this really is a circuit they should wish to be breaking.Related TopicsThe Telegraph values your comments but kindly requests all posts are on topic, constructive and respectful.
