Ayanna Pressley.The Randolph Republican, who ran a write-in campaign to take on Pressley in the 7th Congressional District, received just more than 1,200 votes in the state primaries last week, according to Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin’s office.Whether that’s enough to earn her a spot on the ballot remains in dispute between Campbell and the state.The secretary’s office claims Campbell didn’t make the cut, citing the statute that says write-in candidates must obtain at least as many votes as the number of signatures required for a candidate to be nominated to the ballot for that seat. For the House of Representatives, that’s 2,000.But the state Supreme Judicial Court in April slashed the number of signatures candidates needed to make the Sept. 1 primary ballot by half in response to a lawsuit over the perils of signature collecting during the pandemic.Campbell’s lawsuit, a copy of which was provided to the Herald, argues that the court’s spring ruling means she only needs 1,000 votes to make the ballot. She’s seeking an equitable order requiring the secretary’s office to secure her spot to run for the seat that represents roughly two-thirds of Boston, along with Somerville, Chelsea, Everett, Randolph and parts of Cambridge and Milton.“I’m not going to allow them to silence me and my constituents’ voices,” Campbell told the Herald.After a tense exchange between Campbell and two representatives from the secretary of the commonwealth’s office in the lobby of One Ashburton Place Wednesday afternoon failed to produce a result in her favor, Campbell, who is backed by the state Republican Party, put the matter before the state’s highest court to decide.“They’re just trying to keep me off the ballot,” Campbell said. “We’re not going to back down.”We invite you to use our commenting platform to engage in insightful conversations about issues in our community.
