Neighbors will hold a small celebration Saturday to commemorate the promenade.AdvertisementSchur, a 1993 Hall High School graduate, grew up right behind the park, and was quick to help when Friends of Fernridge Park sought out donors. Long after moving to Los Angeles, Schur still cared enough to pitch in, said Esther Spigel, co-founder of the Friends group and one of Schur’s former neighbors.“Michael has been a great supporter. His whole summer was spent in the park,” Spigel said. “His backyard abutted the tennis courts — he’s talked about how he’d go through the gates in the morning to play tennis, then go down to the pool, then later pay soccer or baseball.”AdvertisementSchur, who has gone on to other shows since Parks and Recreation ended in 2015, asked that the dedication plaque include a quote from the Knope character: “Let’s embark on a new journey, together, and see where it takes us.”Amy Poehler portrayed Knope, an assistant parks and recreation director in a fictional Indiana town.“I think Leslie Knope has become quite a mentor to young women and men because of her optimism and positive attitude, even in the midst of all the political stuff going on,” Spigel said. “She’s able to make a difference and get things done — young people take that to heart.”Schur, who has also donated to the West Hartford Summer Arts Festival, will be too busy to travel back to Connecticut to see the park’s new feature, Spigel said. But she plans to send photos from Saturday evening’s ceremony.Schur’s link to West Hartford’s parks and recreation operation goes beyond just being a former resident.“He used to work for this department — between high school and college, he was a camp counselor,” said Helen Rubino-Turco, director of Leisure and Social Services. “When we heard he wanted the promenade named for Leslie, we thought that was hilarious.
