SectionsExtrasWatch NowPOYNETTE, Wis. — All northbound lanes on Interstate-39 near Poynette were closed for hours Friday due to a multi-vehicle crash involving a semi.A news release from the state Department of Transportation said the State Patrol responded to a possible four-vehicle crash that happened at about 4:45 p.m. When they arrived, officials saw a semi unit hauling “hazardous, corrosive and flammable” materials had overturned on the interstate.All northbound lanes on I-39 at Mile Marker 116 were closed as a result.The semi sustained significant damage and leaked some of the hazardous material. The Portage Fire Department’s HAZMAT team was sent and rendered the scene mostly safe. The semi-trailer had blocked two of the lanes and was not moved until the materials were offloaded.Officials said there were traffic backups in excess of nine miles.
