A dad shone a laser pen at a police helicopter pilot because the noise of the aircraft interrupted him listening to an audiobook, a court heard.Stephen Reid, 55, lost his rag at the racket on July 18 last year after being ‘plagued by police helicopters searching for individuals’ close to his home in Kentish Town, northwest .No longer able to hear his novel being narrated, he used the powerful blue beam to dazzle the pilot before quickly chucking the laser pen into his back garden when officers spotlit him from the air.Reid later admitted shining a laser beam towards a vehicle at Wood Green Crown Court where he was spared jail ‘by the finest margin’.Judge Guy Mathieson told him: ‘I know you didn’t realise, but shining a laser into the eyes of a pilot is an astonishingly stupid and an astonishingly dangerous thing to do.’Prosecutor Darren Almeida said officers on board the helicopter summoned ground units who had to threaten to force their way inside Reid’s home before he eventually opened up.He added: ‘The police officers inside the helicopter informed them that they’d seen Reid open the back door and discard property.‘A dog unit was called and located a blue laser pointer as well as another green laser. He admitted it was his and that was recorded by body-worn cameras.’Defending, Michael Forward told the court the father-of-two ‘sees life in very unsophisticated terms’.‘He was reading an audiobook and the local area he says is plagued by police helicopters searching for individuals as a result of information received from police inquiries,’ he added.‘Something got into his head and he utilised this laser pen to cause what could have been a catastrophe.’Judge Mathieson handed Reid a four-month sentence suspended for 18 months and ordered him to complete a 60-day rehabilitation programme.He said: ‘Any distraction and that helicopter is crashing into an urban area with devastating consequences.‘You were irritated, frustrated and annoyed at what they were doing interrupting your audiobook and it’s clear you were not thinking about the consequences of your behaviour.‘By the finest margin I can imagine I can suspend this sentence.
