Please look at the time stamp on the story to see when it was last updated.CHICAGO — A postal worker was critically wounded after she was shot while delivering the mail on the Far South Side Thursday afternoon.A 24-year-old woman was delivering mail on the 9100 block of South Ellis Avenue in Burnside around 11:30 a.m. Thursday when she was shot multiple times, according to the Chicago Fire Department.Police said she was shot four times and sustained wounds in the legs, stomach and back of her head.The woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition.Police said she was not the intended target.Police said the gunmen were in separate vehicles driving by at a high rate of speed when the shots were fired.The mail carrier works out of the Grand Crossing branch and is relatively new to the route, according to neighbors.Some of her co-workers came to the scene distraught over what happened.“I’ve been carrying mail at times where there were shootings going on, where I had to leave the route, run back to my truck,” said Isis Edwards. “It’s not something that doesn’t happen, it makes you cautious, nervous, pray even more that you make it back home.”Delois Dean, who grew up in Burnside and lives there, said this is the fourth shooting on the block in the last month.“August 6, me and my husband were driving and we made a right turn up there,” she said. “Our car got shot up 22 times with us in it.”The latest shooting has shaken the men and women whose job it is to walk these streets every day and deliver mail.“I just want to make it back home to my daughter I just want to make it back home the same way I left be able to do my job without anyone messing with me,” Edmond said. “Without being caught in gang crossfire or anything, just to be able to make it back home.”The United States Postal Service is offering a reward up to $50,000 for information on the shooting.
