MEMPHIS, Tenn. — We have learned that the man shot by U.S. Marshals Tuesday was not the man they were looking for.U.S. Marshals spotted the man they shot in a car connected to a fugitive murder suspect.The man was taken to the hospital in non-critical condition.FOX13 has learned yesterday’s mission was not part of Operation LeGend.We received the following statement from U.S. Atty. D. Michael Dunavant:The United States Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force was executing an operation to apprehend a violent fugitive. Those Task Force agents were not part of the ongoing Operation LeGend efforts. Additional temporary and permanent federal agent assignments to Memphis from FBI, ATF, DEA, and HSI under Operation LeGend are imbedded with the MPD and SCSO in the Multi-Agency Gang Unit, and are actively supporting and participating in ongoing violent crimes investigations, including murder, robbery, aggravated assault, carjacking, gang conspiracies, and drug trafficking cases. When appropriate and necessary, and though the Operation LeGend Task Force, federal agents will assist local officers in the arrest of violent offenders.RELATED: The mother of the teenager shot by U.S. Marshals in South Memphis told FOX13 she wants answers about the shooting that landed her son in the hospital.Shanta Holliday told FOX13′s Jeremy Pierre she last heard from her son moments after paramedics put him in an ambulance on his way to the hospital with a gunshot wound.“I’m really in the dark. I don’t know anything,” Holliday said.U.S. Marshals shot Shanta’s 17-year-old son Darshaun Holliday after he rammed several vehicles belonging to the marshals.Investigators with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said Marshals spotted Darshaun Holliday in a car that a fugitive killer is known to drive.Shanta told FOX13 investigators showed her a picture of the man Marshals thought they went after.“It looks nothing like my son. So they need to do a better job identifying people,” Holiday said.Shanta Holliday said her son does have a history of stealing cars. Before the shooting, Juvenile Court monitored his whereabouts with an ankle monitor.Shanta Holliday said when the marshals pulled up they probably startled her son.“No telling who he thought it was,” Holliday said. “You can’t say - you don’t see no police badge, no police cars-all of them unmarked.
