byCHIPPEWA FALLS, WI (WSAU) -- A man who killed three Girl Scouts in November of 2018 will spend over 5 decades in prison.Colten Treu, 23, was sentenced to 54 years in prison Wednesday by Judge James Issacson. Treu was sentenced for charges of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and hit and run involving great bodily harm.Judge Issacson told Treu that for his sentencing he considered factors like past criminal history, the viciousness of the crime, remorsefulness, employment, and rights of the public. Issacson also said that the crime was an avoidable tragedy and that the community would never know who those killed would grow up to be.The charges stem from a hit-and-run on November 3rd where Treu hit and killed three Girl Scouts and an adult volunteer after huffing paint. One other girl was seriously injured in the hit-and-run as well.Treu's sentencing hearing lasted for 3 days with over 25 victim impact statements. Following Treu's prison sentence in 2074, he will spend 45 years on extended supervision.
