The teachers are willing and eager to teach&nbsp;online, Martin said.More:More:The union vote is being closely watched by educators across the region. More than 40 school districts in metro Detroit plan to offer students some form of face-to-face learning&nbsp;when school resumes. Most private schools and many charter schools&nbsp;also plan face-to-face learning.About 30 districts have decided to begin the year online only, at least until COVID-19 case numbers decline. The decision on whether to reopen classrooms or stay online has been a divisive one at school board meetings across the state in recent weeks.&nbsp;Detroit Superintendent Nikolai Vitti has been a vocal proponent of returning children to classrooms, albeit with safety precautions like temperature checks, masks and social distance measures in place. Vitti insists that students need it and families do, too.Vitti said in a statement that he remains hopeful ahead of the strike vote.“We do not believe DFT will participate in unlawful activity," Vitti said. "We also know that our teachers have always served our families and their children. We have worked through several challenges with DFT and teachers in the past and we will do so through the reopening process."Vitti said he has been open to concerns of union members."DFT has always had open access to the superintendent and school board," he said. "We are now actively working through legitimate questions and concerns DFT has regarding safety concerns with the reopening plan.
