Indianapolis Star MORGAN COUNTY — Two new two new state forests were established Friday during a ceremony&nbsp;outside the new Ravinia State Forest attended by Gov. Eric Holcomb, Department of Natural Resources officers and other Indiana officials."It's such a beautiful place for Hoosiers all over the state that I hope that they take part of," Holcomb said.Ravinia State Forest and Mountain Tea State Forest are the 14th and 15th Indiana forests and the first to be established in 67 years, said Dan Bortner, director of the Department of Natural Resources.Ravinia State Forest, previously part of the Morgan-Monroe State Forest, is located in Morgan County directly across from Burkhart&nbsp;Creek County Park. It is 1,500 acres and features opportunities to hunt, hike, view wildlife and gather nuts, wild berries and mushrooms.Mountain Tea State Forest, which had been part of Yellowwood State Forest, is a 1,153-acre area in Brown County. Recreation at Mountain Tea includes hiking, hunting, wildlife viewing and mushrooming.As part of its program to plant 1 million trees by 2025, the DNR will plant 60,000 to 70,000 trees in Mountain Tea and Ravinia. The state has already planted&nbsp;220,000 trees as part of this program.“It’s great to gather in the woods and celebrate recreation and conservation in the state of Indiana,” Holcomb said.During the ceremony, Bortner told a legend about the area that is now&nbsp;Ravinia State Forest.He&nbsp;said it was was purchased more than a century ago by a traveler who spent the night at a farmhouse nearby and found the area to be incredibly beautiful when he saw it the next morning in the light."He fell in love with this place, and it's easy to see how," Bortner said.&nbsp;For a while, the farm was known for its grand champion cows and hogs, but the animals were eventually sold — to Henry Ford, as the legend goes.&nbsp;Although there is no longer a working farm, Bortner said the land still holds the magic the traveler felt so long ago.“Today, Ravinia is a new place for new memories,” Bortner said.Morgan County Councilor Daniel Elliott said having Ravinia as a separate state forest allows people to explore a part of the county they might not think to go to when visiting the Morgan-Monroe State Forest.Elliott, who is an outdoorsman, hopes to bring his 8-year-old son “adventuring” in the primitive forest area.“I see the opportunity as a dad to teach my son about nature,” Elliott said.Especially with COVID-19 keeping people away from exercise and group activities, Elliott said having a new state forest in the area could be a way for people to spend time outdoors and be physical.“It’s about identity,” Elliott said. “This represents some of the amazing outdoor opportunities in our county.”Contact&nbsp;Pulliam Fellow&nbsp;Lydia Gerike at lgerike@gannett.com or follow her on Twitter&nbsp;@LydiaGerike.
