NEW!There are no tropical storms in the Atlantic as of Sunday night, but that could change this week.The National Hurricane Center has been tracking two storms, Josephine and Kyle, but both have fizzled.Josephine has been downgraded twice -- first to a tropical depression and then to a remnant low as it passed well north of Puerto Rico. Forecasters issued the last advisory on Josephine on Sunday afternoon.And Kyle has lost its tropical features too and was ruled a post-tropical storm in the northern Atlantic. The hurricane center issued its last advisory on Kyle early this morning.But forecasters are also now watching two tropical waves, one in the central Atlantic and one near the west coast of Africa, that have the potential to cause trouble later this week.The first tropical wave was located about 500 miles east of the Windward Islands on Sunday night.Rain and storms were blossoming in association with the wave, which was moving westward very quickly. That fast pace will keep it from getting its act together in the short term, according to the hurricane center.It will approach the Windward Islands and southern Leeward Islands today and Monday and move into the eastern Caribbean on Tuesday.Once it gets into the Caribbean it could slow down, and forecasters think conditions could allow it to develop. It could become a tropical depression by the end of the week.The hurricane center raised the chances of a depression forming in the next five days to 50 percent on Sunday night. That’s up from 30 percent this morning.The second tropical wave wave was not far from the west coast of Africa and east of the Cabo Verde Islands as of Sunday night.It is expected to track westward at 15-20 mph over the next few days. It has a better chance of development later this week when it reaches the central Atlantic -- and it also could become a depression by the end of the week.It also has a 50 percent chance of becoming a tropical depression in the next five days. That’s also an increase from 30 percent earlier today.On the way out as of Sunday night is Josephine, now a remnant low.Josephine fell apart as it passed north of the Virgin Islands, according to forecasters.As of the final advisory on Josephine, at 4 p.m. CDT Sunday, it was located about 175 miles north-northeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and was moving west-northwest at 12 mph.It had top winds of 35 mph.Then there’s what was Tropical Storm Kyle, which has transitioned to a post-tropical storm.The hurricane center issued its last advisory on Kyle early this morning, when it was 545 miles southwest of Cape Race, Newfoundland.Kyle had winds of 40 mph but had lost its tropical features. It was expected to continue tracking eastward and away from land.There have been 11 named storms so far this season in the Atlantic, and what is typically the busiest stretch of the season is just beginning and will last into October, with the climatological peak coming on Sept. 10.NOAA forecasters think there could be 19-25 named storms before the season ends of Nov. 30.Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.
