NorthJersey.comView CommentsThe painted letters on a major Jersey City thoroughfare spells out an unmistakable message: BLACK LIVES MATTER.The same&nbsp;words&nbsp;have appeared on streets in towns and cities across the country&nbsp; have taken place in the aftermath of the deaths&nbsp;of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor at the hands of police.The block-long mural stretches across Grand Street in an area with a predominantly Black population known as The Junction, where several roads intersect.&nbsp;Huge black and yellow letters are framed against yellow and black backgrounds and bookended by images of legendary civil rights activist and scholar Angela Davis and former NFL player and activist Colin Kaepernick. The “L” in Black is capped by a clinched fist.Local artist Alvin Pettit led a core group of eight artists and other volunteers who worked on the mural daily for two weeks until it was completed on Monday, spending an average of 10 hours in grueling heat working with street-grade paint and other materials donated by the city.Story continues after gallery.Pettit said the design was based on similar murals around the country and other sources, such as newspapers published by the 1960s-era Black Panthers activist group and 1970s poster art.He said reactions have been "95 percent"&nbsp;positive.&nbsp;The other five percent were&nbsp;from those who either disagreed with the mural’s message or liked the mural but felt it should have placed in another location in the city.“Overall, you had people that really liked it and were supportive for it, and … they wanted to just come out and talk to you about it, or how they wanted to just start expressing their ideas on how they felt about the [Black Lives Matter] movement,” Pettit said.&nbsp;More:More:City Councilwoman Joyce Watterman, who reached out to Pettit to work on the mural, said she loved the finished work and the message that it sends.“I think it’s a beautiful job. … &nbsp;Anytime a movement takes place there is always something to remind us of the movement,” Watterman said.Also appreciative was Bruce Alston, one of the residents whom Watterman credited with proposing to the city with the idea of the mural.“I hope that it serves as an inspirational piece, to let people know that Black Lives Matter, but more importantly that us as African-Americans know every day that we matter, and we don’t forget that,” Alston said.Ricardo&nbsp;Kaulessar&nbsp;is a local reporter for NorthJersey.com.
