Dead fish began surfacing Thursday.Iowa’s Department of Natural Resources investigated reports Wednesday morning that a tributary of Ankeny’s Fourmile Creek had turned white and that fish in the stream were struggling at the surface.&nbsp;The DNR traced the contamination through a storm drain and back to the Hy-Vee store at 410 N. Ankeny Blvd.The store lost power and closed early on Monday after tore through Iowa. Employees at the store improperly disposed of milk that spoiled during the outage,&nbsp;Hy-Vee spokesperson Tina Potthoff said."A Hy-Vee employee made an uninformed decision when instructing others on how to dispose of milk that had gone bad due to the recent power outages caused by Monday’s storms," Pothoff said in an e-mail.More:Potthoff said Hy-Vee was working with the DNR and the city of Ankeny to contain and clean up the spill before it could reach Fourmile Creek.&nbsp;The introduction of the milk into the stream could lower oxygen levels in the water, endangering fish, crawfish and insects.The DNR said Thursday that dead fish were surfacing in the tributary. They were mostly minnows and small gamefish. DNR fisheries staff planned a fish count late Thursday.More:Milky water had not reached Fourmile Creek as of Thursday afternoon, according to a news release. The solution involved creating a series of dams to trap the contaminated water and vacuum it up for proper disposal, a DNR release said.
