Whether it was insulting or not insulting, she would tell you what she thought even when sometimes it created friction in the family,” said her grandson, Steven Fulop. “But you also had to appreciate where she was coming from.”Fulop, who is the mayor of Jersey City, said his grandmother’s directness was part of the independent personality that enabled her to live alone in Bloomfield for years after her husband, Bentsi, passed away.“She wanted to live alone where she wanted to live without an assisted living or nursing home-type facility until it was realistically impossible to do so,” Fulop said. “She would tend to her garden and planting by herself until she was 94.&nbsp;“She was a strong woman and very active. She was physically strong until COVID. She would go to the supermarket to do her shopping by herself. She lived on the second floor of a building with no elevator, so she would be climbing stairs by herself.”Fulop said what he will also miss is a person who was “generous with her money and generous with her time,” and he felt blessed that she got to spend time with his first son, Jaxon, born in January 2019.Elizabeth Fulop died on May 21 at the age of 95 in the Cupola at Care One nursing home in Ridgewood, six months after she moved there.Loved and Lost:She lived in New Jersey for more than 50 years, coming from Israel with her husband and her son Arthur, Steven’s father, in 1966. It was a journey that started in their native Romania.&nbsp;A short time later, the Fulops opened a sandwich shop near Newark’s City Hall that the family owned and operated until July 2020,&nbsp;when it closed forever due to the coronavirus pandemic.Fulop said he was spared his grandmother's blunt assessments growing up but gained a great deal from being around her, especially when he worked in the deli as a young boy.“She set the stage for the work ethic that my father certainly has, and that I think that my brother and I certainly have, because it’s kind of modeled after her work ethic,” Fulop said. “She was certainly one who would be in that store nonstop. She had this mindset that if you put in the hours and the time, you can do anything.”View Comments
