Rand Paul, though, has some reservations.Kentucky’s two U.S. senators are both strong Trump allies but had differing opinions about the president’s actions over the weekend – which, among other moves, temporarily halt&nbsp;payroll tax collection and student loan payments for some Americans in an attempt to support those who have been hit hard by the pandemic, which has closed businesses across the U.S. and caused unemployment to spike.McConnell said in a statement Sunday, , that the move will “get unemployment benefits and other relief to the people who need them the most.” The six-term senator, up for reelection in November, blamed Democrats in the nation’s capital for the standstill in Congress, as ongoing talks with White House negotiators on a new stimulus bill had stalled in recent days.“I am glad that President Trump is proving that while Democrats use laid-off workers as political pawns, Republicans will actually look out for them,” .Paul, though, saw the executive orders as an overreach that violates “not only the spirit, but the letter of the law."Related:Borrowing money for another relief bill&nbsp;will add a significant amount to an already ballooning federal deficit, . But beyond that, he continued, Trump’s executive orders take pressure off of Congress to negotiate a more broad relief deal. A continued impasse, he said, would have eventually led to a compromise.Trump’s actions also go a step beyond the powers that are given to a president, Paul said.“Presidents don’t get to legislate. Presidents don’t have the power of the purse," Paul told Newsmax TV.&nbsp;"I was a big critic of President Obama for spending and borrowing and for executive orders on immigration, so I’m not a fan of this.”Trump's orders would temporarily end payroll tax deductions, a move he's said he hoped to make permanent if he's reelected in November and that some critics have said would crater Social Security and Medicare budgets, as well as defer&nbsp;payments on some student loans, encourage a halt in evictions and provide $400 per week to those who apply for unemployment benefits, with states picking up 25% of that tab.Gov.
