Combined, the 50 largest cities reported a total of 3,612 homicides from January to June, an increase of 24 percent.RELATED:&nbsp;Locally, 71 homicides have been reported. During the same time frame last year, the San Antonio Police Department reported 53 homicides, according to the . San Antonio's increase, which is about 35 percent, puts the city behind Austin, Chicago and Fort Worth, which take up the top three spots, respectively, according to the newspaper.While robberies seem to be on the decline, as many people are working and learning from home, San Antonio leads the largest cities in percent change from 2019. San Antonio's robberies increased by more than 20 percent. According to SAPD's numbers, 1,140 robberies have been reported since the start of the year. In 2019, that number was 926."Homicides and robberies are up nationwide and we cannot attribute it to anything in particular," the SAPD public information officer said.The newspaper spoke to analysts who believe homicides are up because violent criminals are "emboldened by the sidelining of police, courts, schools and churches and an array of other social institutions by the reckoning with the police and the pandemic."
