By COLUMBUS, Ohio&nbsp;—&nbsp;Public officials in Ohio convicted of federal corruption charges would lose the taxpayer-financed share of their state pension, under legislation introduced by two Northeast Ohio representatives.Under current law, public officials convicted on state bribery or racketeering charges can&nbsp;have&nbsp;their state pension revoked. would add the equivalent crimes under federal law, as well as a litany of other federal charges including theft, extortion and fraud.The bill is sponsored by Republican state Reps. Gayle Manning, of Lorain County and Dave Greenspan, of Westlake.“I certainly believe we are held to a higher standard than most people, and we should be,” Manning said. “We’re getting taxpayer money, and I just feel that if somebody does anything this serious, they should lose their pension.”Previous versions of the bill have been introduced in past legislative sessions. The Ohio House approved , but the legislation stalled in the state Senate.Past sponsors have represented the Cleveland area, and have referenced the Cuyahoga County corruption scandal from the late 2000s that led to the arrest and imprisonment of dozens of government officials, including former Cuyahoga County Democratic Party Chair Jimmy Dimora and Cuyahoga County Auditor Frank Russo.But Manning said this version of the bill is in part a response to last month’s arrest of Republican House Speaker Larry Householder, former Ohio Republican Party Chairman Matt Borges and three others.&nbsp;Householder has been removed as speaker but remains in the House.“We thought this was the perfect time to introduce it and see if we can get some traction on it this time around,” Manning said.The bill would only target the share of state pension covered by public employers — it would leave untouched&nbsp;an employee’s own money they contributed toward their retirement.The bill has seven co-sponsors —&nbsp;6 Republicans and one Democrat, Cleveland state Rep.
