On July 29, that number is down to 57.Dr. Jason McKinney with Mercy said the hospital was able to combine its two COVID-19 units into one because hospitalizations have decreased by about 50 percent in the last few weeks. "If we want to see these numbers keep going down, we've got to be vigilant for the next couple of months at least in order to keep seeing that trend," McKinney said. McKinney works with the critically-ill COVID-19 patients at Mercy. He said his patients are some of the sickest he has ever seen. "It's been one of the hardest things I've had to do. It's really hard and then, the patients are alone. Their families can't come visit. I know they are scared. We've lost a lot, but we've also been able to save a lot," he said. Governor Asa Hutchinson said the decline in hospitalizations is proof that Arkansans are taking COVID-19 seriously. "The Northwest is now down to one of the slowest growth rates of all the public health units. It's a success story through contact tracing and that concentrated effort, we were able to slow the tide of cases in the Northwest region. That is a really great thing," Hutchinson said. McKinney said, even though things are looking up in NWA, Arkansans can't let their guards down yet. "This virus doesn't care who you are. I see this virus kill 30-year-olds, I see this virus kill 40-year-olds, and yes, it kills 80-year-olds and 90-year-olds too.
