The commission also voted to make the Negro Leagues location of the baseball diamond the primary layout.Story continues below galleryIn discussing the details of the rebuilt stadium, the historic commission members repeatedly cited Hinchliffe’s legacy as one of few Negro League stadiums still standing — for which it was designated a national landmark.“The last thing we want is a glorified football field,” said commission member William Tate. “It’s important that we reach through the portal of history back to the Negro Leagues.”Commission members initially opposed artificial turf at the historic site. But the developers argued against using grass because the field will be used for multiple sports — including baseball and football —&nbsp;for as many as 180 events per year.“It just becomes really impractical,” developer Baye Adolfo-Wilson said of grass.Adolfo-Wilson said Paterson should strive for the most widespread use possible for Hinchliffe. He cited Newark’s Bears &amp; Eagles Riverfront Stadium, which was demolished in 2019, just two decades after it was built.&nbsp;EARLIER:BLAZE:LAWSUIT:The developer said he hopes to start construction this fall. Mayor Andre Sayegh has championed the reconstruction of Hinchliffe as being pivotal to Paterson’s revitalization efforts. Sayegh on Monday said he doesn’t have a preference regarding the location of the baseball diamond or whether it should have grass or turf.&nbsp;“My priority is to resurrect the stadium,” the mayor said.Brian LoPinto, one of the founders of the Friends of Hinchliffe Stadium group, spoke during the public comment portion of the historic commission meeting, urging the board to require the developers to rebuild the ballpark the way it was during the Negro Leagues days.“This is a national historic landmark, not a beer league field,” LoPinto asserted.The stadium is owned by the Paterson school district, and the developers said city education officials strongly supported the use of the turf.In addition to the rebuilt stadium, the $78 million project would include a 314-space parking garage, a 75-apartment senior citizen building, a restaurant and museum space for exhibits about the Negro Leagues.Joe Malinconico is editor of Paterson Press.
