PORSHA: IN AN EFFORT TO SAFELY REOPEN SCHOOLS THIS FALL, THE GOVERNOR SAYS HE’LL BE DIRECTING $10 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDS TO PROVIDE MASKS, FACE SHIELD GLOVES AND GOWNS WHILE WORKING ON A PLAN TO TEST TEACHERS FOR THE VIRUS MONTHLY. KATHERINE BISHOP: WE WERE EXCITED TO HEAR THAT THE GOVERNOR HAS HEEDED WHAT WE’VE BEEN CALLING FOR, PROVIDING DISTRICTS WITH THE NEEDED PPE, BUT WE WERE MISSING SEVERAL THINGS BUT WE WERE MISSING SEVERAL THINGS. IT DOESN’T HIT EVERYTHING THAT’S NEEDED BY DOING A MONTHLY TEST ON TEACHERS. WE HAVE DISTRICTS THAT CANNOT SECURE THE SIMPLE THING OF CLEANING SUPPLIES. TO MAKE SURE THAT THEIR SCHOOLS ARE CLEAN. SO THERE IS SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST A SIMPLE ANSW OF, GO BACK TO SCHOOL FACE-TO-FACE AND WE WILL TEST TEACHERS EACH MONTH. Kevin Stitt announced a $10 million commitment from the coronavirus relief package to be used to provide personal protective equipment for teachers and students across Oklahoma.The governor made the pledge Thursday while encouraging parents to send their children back to classrooms.“Our kids cannot miss another year of school,” Stitt said.With current COVID-19 numbers, both Oklahoma Education Association officials and Oklahoma City Public Schools Superintendent Sean McDaniel said in-person learning is the target. They added, however, that a virtual model is safer right now.“No one more than educators, Oklahoma educators, want to be back face to face with our students; however, we can only do that when it’s safe to do so,” said Katherine Bishop, vice president of the Oklahoma Education Association.The $10 million pledge in federal funds will be used to provide masks, face shields, gloves and gowns. The commitment comes while working on a plan to test teachers for the virus monthly.“We were excited to hear that the governor has heeded what we’ve been calling for – providing districts with the needed PPE … but we were missing several things,” Bishop said. “It doesn’t hit everything that’s needed by doing a monthly test on teachers.
