It is such a sadness...I read this story twice earlier in the week, and again just now. Each time it becomes more compelling. The Author does a beautiful job of telling an incredibly lugubrious tale in an exceptionally empathetic manner. Outstanding quoting, commentary, and sourcing from myriad locales, provide the undergirding. The Writer's own exposition provides insightful elucidation. The included photographs, while welcome (to put a face, so to speak, on the dog referenced) nevertheless do lend to the laden atmospherics of the piece. In the end though, a worthwhile, if tragic, account told well. Five stars! Lastly, and allowing leave for a brief digression, the words of Aeschylus come to mind. "Even in our sleep, pain which cannot forget, falls drop by drop upon the heart..."
