Sherrod Brown on Wednesday introduced legislation designed to help the country stockpile medical supplies for future emergencies and quickly ramp up domestic production when it’s needed.“Too many of our front line workers, including health care providers, have experienced shortages of critical personal protective equipment at a time when they needed it most,” Brown told reporters this week. “Health care workers on the front line should be focused on the important work they do. They shouldn’t have to worry about keeping themselves healthy and safe because of a lack of protective equipment.”Brown’s “Protecting American Heroes Act” would require mandatory funding for the Strategic National Stockpile and give the Health and Human Services Secretary authority to order production under the during public health emergencies. It would also extend DPA authority to the HHS Secretary during a public health emergency.It would also require the stockpiled supplies to be produced in the United States, with exceptions allowed based on availability and would create a new job called “Executive Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Strategic National Stockpile” to put stockpile decisions in the hands of a high-ranking career professional who would regularly update Congress on the stockpile’s status.“It’s imperative to our nation’s infrastructure, to our health and safety, to have these items produced at home and have the capability to do just that,” said Kim Glas, President and CEO of the National Council of Textile Organizations, which backs Brown’s bill. “Too many frontline workers are still seeking PPE, and this is months after the pandemic. This should just simply never happen again.”She noted that several Northeast Ohio companies stepped up to produce supplies during the pandemic, including Cleveland cotton swab manufacturer which started making testing kit swabs, and , which is supplying material to make face masks, gowns and face shields. Glas said the Westlake firm looks forward to producing these items for the Strategic National Stockpile., who retired in January as Strategic National Stockpile director, endorsed the bill in a statement issued by Brown’s office.“The SNS is a key asset protecting national health security,” said Burel. “It is imperative that it be capable of responding to all hazards that may threaten the United States.
