HE’S ALL OVER THE ROAD FROM THE SKY TO THE PAVEMENT TROOPERS WROTE MORE THAN ELEVEN HUNDRED TICKETS FOR SPEEDS TOPPING 100 MILES PER HOUR FROM LATE MARCH TO THE START OF THIS MONTH. THAT’S A 75% SPIKE OVER THE SAME PERIOD LAST YEAR I CAUGHT UP WITH TROOPER JESSICA MCINTYRE AS SHE LOOKED FOR SPEEDERS ON 275 IN FAIRFIELD. THERE’S MORE OPEN ROADWAY, SO THAT COULD BE A POSSIBILITY MORE PEOPLE ARE STAYING HOME, WHICH MEANS THE ROADS ARE LESS CONGESTED WHEN THERE’S MORE TRAFFIC ON THE HIGHWAY. THERE’S LESS ROOM F TO SIMPLY LEAVE THE SPEED LIMIT. REARVIEW MIRRORS CARS ARE SLOWING DOWN WHEN THERE’S CONGESTION. SO WE DON’T HAVE THAT AS MUCH I SEE THAT KATHY BONNEY. WELL IS AMONG THOSE STAYING HOME BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC I DON’T GET ON THE FREEWAY A LOT ANYMORE BECAUSE I’M ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE THAT GET TO WORK FROM HOME WHEN SHE DOES HIT THE HIGHWAY HER THOUGHTS TAKE HER ACROSS THE ATLANTIC TO A COUNTRY WHERE PLENTY OF ROADS HAVE NO SPEED LIMIT AT ALL. I LIVED IN GERMANY FOR FIVE YEARS AND THE ONLY KIND OF ACCIDENT THEY HAD THEIR WAS FATAL AND THAT’S WHAT IT REMINDS ME OF BECAUSE I DON’T HAVE SPEED LIMITS THERE. SO IT CONCERNS ME THAT PEOPLE JUST GET CARELESS AND GET CARRIED AWAY FROM LEAD MARCH TO EARLY JULY STATE TROOPERS TICKETED MORE DRIVERS FOR GOING AT LEAST 100 MILES PER HOUR OVER THE SPEED LIMIT IN WARREN AND BUTLER COUNTY. She isn't exactly sure why there seem to be more super speeders on the road these days, but she thinks Covid-19 is playing a role. More people are staying home, which means the roads are less congested. When there's more traffic on the highway, there's less room for people to simply leave the speed limit in their rear-view mirrors."Cars are slowing down when there’s congestion. So, you know, we don’t have that as much," McIntyre said.Cathy Bonewell of Springfield Township is among those staying home because of the pandemic."I don't get on the freeway a lot anymore because I'm one of those people that gets to work from home," Bonewell said. "I'm very lucky in that respect."When she does hit the highway, Bonewell's thoughts take her across the Atlantic, to a country where plenty of roads have no speed limit at all."I lived in Germany for five years. And the only kind of accident they had there was fatal. And that's what it reminds me of," Bonewell said.
