About 70 percent of those deaths have occurred in long-term care facilities.Ohio’s death rate from the coronavirus is now 27 per 100,000 people, according to the Ohio Department of Health data.The record for daily cases comes just after Gov. Mike DeWine urged residents must to act now to better protect themselves and their communities from spreading the disease as in other states, such as Texas and Florida.DeWine, 73, has not ruled out a statewide mask mandate if the cases keep climbing.“I will do what I have to do to protect the people of Ohio,” he said during a late-afternoon TV address Wednesday.He did not hold a press conference Friday.Ohio has now reported more than 1,000 new cases for nine straight days. The state requires new and confirmed positive cases be reported within 24 hours of discovery.New ICU admissions reported Friday were at 25, also above July’s average so far of 18.6 new admissions per day. The state averaged 14 new ICU admissions and 57 new hospitalizations a day in June.Dr. Michael Oglesbee, head of the Ohio State University Infectious Disease Institute, said the rate of new cases showing up in hospitals can lag, though it’s unclear by how much.He said Ohioans infected with the disease might not be showing up in hospitals because they are younger and their symptoms more mild.The state also reported a record number of daily tests performed at 26,929 with 6.3 percent of those testing positive. That is near or at the last seven-day average of positive tests performedDeWine said Thursday he will consider more severe restrictions on the activity of Ohioians if the infections are not brought under control.A total of 19 counties are labeled as “red” mandating mask use under the state’s new county-by-county advisory system.DeWine said that accounts for 60 percent of Ohio’s population.Residents in red counties are required to wear facial masks in public, at least until their county is downgraded to orange, to alleviate spread of the infection.lsullivan@dispatch.com@DispatchSullyView Comments
