Yet public health officials have continued to encourage testing and say results are usually available much quicker. They say the speed with which someone receives their results depends on where they’re tested and how whether there’s a backlog. Also, they say, it can take longer if tests are negative. However, KOCO 5 spoke to one woman who said she has been waiting for four months for results, long after she returned to work. “Having trouble breathing, shortness of breath, coughing, just feeling really nasty, yucky.”Sherry Hull said, describing her symptoms. “I called my doctor and she was like, ‘Yeah, all the symptoms I was showering were consistent with COVID.’”So Hull went to a clinic to have a nasal swab test performed. “I went in, got tested, and never heard anything back,” she said. She waited a few days and reached out. “I called several times to get my test results and they’re like, ‘They’re not in yet, they’re not in yet,’” she said. Then weeks passed. “I finally gave up in April, I just gave up! I went back to work,” she said. Hull’s situation isn’t unique.Dozens of people have contacted KOCO 5 to describe the waits they’ve endured to receive their COVID-19 test results.“You should be able to get it back within 24 to 48 hours,” Health Commissioner Dr. Lance Frye said. While Frye acknowledged that people shouldn’t have to wait long for their tests, the wait could depend on the type of clinic that performed the test. “There are still some labs that are sending out of state for processing and those take longer,” he said. Also, he noted, labs may process tests and send off for processing but not call quickly – especially when tests come back negative. The labs say they’re processing more than 2,000 results a day. The state Health Department said tests also are taking longer because everything is being done manually.
