The carefully worded policy by Defense Secretary Mark Esper likely hopes to avoid triggering backlash from President Donald Trump, who has frequently defended symbols of rebels who waged war against the United States. The new guidance simply lists the types of flags that are allowed to be displayed, including the American flag; the flags of the U.S. states, territories and the District of Columbia; military flags and those of allies."The flags we fly must accord with the military imperatives of good order and discipline, treating all our people with dignity and respect, and rejecting divisive symbols," Esper wrote in the memo. The guidance applies to the public displays of flags by service members or DoD civilians "in all DoD workplaces, common access areas, and public areas."It’s worth noting other symbols of hate, such as the Nazi flags are not banned by name. However, the commander’s intent of the policy clearly wants troops to only fly flags for polite society. Trump has made a culture war the centerpiece of his reelection bid. He recently defended the Confederate battle flag especially after NASCAR banned its display at races. The House version of the NDAA, the must-pass legislation which funds the military directs the DoD to look into renaming installations named after Confederates. However, Trump has threatened to veto any legislation making that move. But the defense spending bill contains too many big-ticket items like a 3% pay raise for troops and a billion dollars for prepare for a next possible pandemic.
