There is a lag between when they occur and when local entities report them to the state.More than testingGov. Mike DeWine didn’t have a coronavirus briefing, but he did release a statement acknowledging the broken record.“As I have said before, the numbers that are trending upward are worrisome,” he said. “However, Ohioans can help prevent the spread of COVID-19 by continuing to practice social distancing, good hand hygiene and wearing a mask in public.”While some members of the Ohio GOP have said that the higher numbers are a mere result of more testing, Gov. Mike DeWine has disputed the argument for weeks.His spokesman Dan Tierney said Friday afternoon that it’s not just cases that are higher but hospitalizations and other metrics.“We’re seeing a higher positivity rate,” Tierney said. “And obviously we’ve been seeing movement in Ohio counties in terms of their numbers trending upwards -- which is evidence of the first two weeks of the Ohio Public Health Advisory System.”Th color-coded coronavirus mapping system requires people in the counties shaded red and purple to wear masks. Last week’s map contained seven red counties. This week’s map has 12. The state determines each county’s level by a number of factors -- .The state tracks the percentage of tests coming back positive. An increase in the positivity rate would indicate more people in the general population have COVID-19 and a surge is upon Ohio.The positivity rate is at 6.7% as of Wednesday, the most recent day for which the state has data. That’s up from a seven-day average of 5.8%.Hospital dataOn Friday, 928 people were hospitalized -- an increase of 23 since Thursday, according to numbers the Ohio Hospital Association provides to the state.A week ago, 773 people were hospitalized.Hospitalizations began to trend upward on June 15, when there were 516 people in hospitals across the state.The Ohio Hospital Association reported 289 people in intensive-care units across the state on Friday. That’s down 11 from 300 on Thursday. A week ago it was 243.And 151 people were on ventilators on Friday. That’s down from 153 on Thursday, but up fro 113 on July 3.TestingThe state health department said as of Friday, 955,697 coronavirus tests have been conducted in Ohio. On Thursday there were 931,834 tests.The state has 11.7 million residents, although some people have been tested more than once.Despite nearly 1 million tests, Ohio’s testing rate per 100,000 residents is 10th lowest in the U.S.: 7,830. Texas is ahead of Ohio at 7,870 and Missouri is behind at 7,220.Outside Ohio Outside Ohio, according to Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Systems Science and Engineering:-At least 12.3 million people have had coronavirus across the world, including over 550,000 deaths.-In the U.S., the confirmed and probable infection count surpassed 3.1 million, with at least 133,000 deaths.-Following the U.S. in in deaths and infections is Brazil.
