I was watching a sermon the other day on marriage and heard the term “sexual atheist”. I try to keep up with theological/social terms and trends, but I had never heard this term before. I am well-aware of the concept though.
A sexual atheist is a professing Christian who acts as if there is no God and no ordained morality when it comes to his sex life. They may seemingly submit to His authority in other areas of their lives, but never with their sexuality.
Although I can certainly see why it is convenient and pleasing to leave God out of one’s sex life, I am going to unapologetically take a hard line in this post on those who do it.
There are many women bloggers who uplift and encourage other Christian women, but there are not enough women who teach God’s word as it is written, expecting their audiences to read and take heed of the warnings and wisdom they give. God has not called me to write mushy-gushy, so if you want your ears tickled so that you feel good in your failings and sin, this is not the blog for you.
There was a brief time in my life when I behaved as if I were a sexual atheist. I am not proud of that period, but I repented long ago.
From Genesis to Revelation, God makes it exceedingly clear that his followers are supposed to include Him and his ways in our sex lives, and that there are consequences, be they physical or eternal, for disobeying his principles.
He is a God that doesn’t change, nor does His eternal character, and to think that we can be sexually deviant as Christians and have a clear conscience is UTTERLY RIDICULOUS AND TOTALLY WRONG!
And by sexual deviance, to be clear so as not to be misunderstood, I mean engaging in any or all of the following:
– premarital sex, including sexting, oral sex, and petting
– pornography of any kind, including sexually explicit scenes on tv and movies
– co-habitating with someone with whom you are having sexual relations of any kind
– any form of homosexual relations, male or female
– flirting, sexting, and/or sexual activity of any kind with someone other than your spouse when you are married, a.k.a adultery
– attending strip parties, strip clubs or bars, or orgies
It doesn’t matter if everyone is doing it,  and it all now seems normal and acceptable to you.  Anything that everyone is doing should always be a big, red flag to Christians. We are called to be a set-apart people,  which requires going against the flow of society.   It’s hard, but necessary.
I am not going to laden this post with scriptures because they are easily looked up for yourselves. But I am going to talk about them because the concepts of sexual purity, chastity, and restraint are very, very clear throughout scripture.
If you have convinced yourself that your sex life is none of God’s business, and you think you are a Christian, YOU HAVE BEEN SELF-DECEIVED. You have fallen prey to lies, and you need to repent and align your life with God’s principles.
Turn your sexual atheism into a God-filled life of chastity, purity, and sex God’s way,  which is only in the construct of a one man, one woman marriage.
If you could care less about including God in your sex life and choices, I would dare to call into question that you have been truly born again. When we are born again, the Spirit of God resides in us and begins to mold us according to his righteousness.
There is not a single truly born-again person who is not being molded into the character of God. We may not have everything down perfectly yet, but He is working in us, and we care about the things in ourselves that aren’t quite there yet. There is NO blatant, in your face, we don’t care about God’s opinion in this area of our lives stuff going on.
When we are true believers, our sex lives MUST conform to the principles and commands in scripture. He says we are to be holy as he is holy (scripture you can look up). He didn’t give exceptions. He gave no disclaimer that we could choose to be “sexual atheists” if we don’t care for his requirements for sexual purity.
He spoke about every single one of the items on the list I gave above. Including homosexuality. They are all wrong. They are all sin. We can’t continue to walk in sin if we are Christians. Therefore, we must repent, stop doing it, and align our lives with God’s word.
You can’t truly love God and not care about what He cares about. He cares about us being obedient in every area of our lives. Any teacher or preacher who indicates otherwise is wrong and is caving in to political correctness.
I care too much about you to do the same. Truth sets you free, and God’s word is the only truth.
