Witness David Greenwood told a trial at Derby Crown Court that as he did so, a woman at the Standing Order shouted “I might need some help here” as she attended to the injured Nicholas Watkins. Ian Magee, of Alvaston, is on trial for wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to Mr Watkins who he stabbed with a folding knife in the Wetherspoon's pub in Iron Gate on April 6, this year. The jury of eight men and four women has already been told how the 61-year-old has pleaded guilty to wounding and possessing the knife, but denies the more serious charge saying he did not intend to cause such serious injuries as he did. Magee, of Shalfleet Drive, is alleged to have said to Mr Watkins inside the pub “give me some money or I will stab you” before plunging the blade once into his neck and then walking out. Witness Mr Greenwood, giving evidence, said he was in the Standing Order with his wife a few metres away from the table where Magee and Mr Watkins were. He said: "One of the men involved did have his hand around the other person's neck, it was not strangulation it was more of a grab, I thought there might be a bit of an argument. Poll: Do you feel safe in Derby city centre? "After a short period of time, the guy with the cap (Magee) made his way out of the pub. I then looked back and that's when I first saw blood. The guy (Mr Watkins) seemed to slightly slump over and a woman said 'I might need some help here,' there was a little bit of shouting as well." A different prosecution witness, Charlotte Dolphin, said she was in the Standing Order with a friend and noticed Mr Watkins and Magee talking together at a table. She said: "It seemed to be an awkward interaction, at first it seemed pally, then (it) seemed aggressive. "I could not hear what they were saying as it was loud in the pub and the male in the flat cap (Magee) had his arm around the shoulder like they were talking like friends but then it seemed to be more aggressive. The flat-capped male went off and the other man was sat quite calmly. "A female from that group came back to the table and started shouting that he (Mr Watkins) was bleeding." Defence barrister Lucky Thandi said clinical notes from the hospital recovered after Mr Watkins was admitted to be treated for the stabbing injuries recorded that he was "intoxicated". Cross-examining the victim after he gave his evidence, she said: "Would you describe yourself as being intoxicated that day?" He replied: "No." Miss Thandi asked: "Would you say your level of intoxication would have affected what you could remember that day?" Mr Watkins replied: "Not really because I did not have that much (alcohol)?" Miss Thandi asked Mr Watkins: "I would suggest you were threatening towards Mr Magee while you were intoxicated and that he did not threaten to stab you if you did not give him money?" He replied: "No." Miss Thandi said: "Your friend said 'leave him alone, he's an old man' or words to that effect didn't she?" Mr Watkins replied: No." Miss Thandi said: "Mr Magee did not ask you for money and he did not make a threat to stab you if you didn't, did he?" Mr Watkins replied: "He did." At the opening of the trial on Tuesday (October 3), CCTV of the stabbing was played to the jury which prosecutor Raglan Mr Ashton gave a running commentary over. It showed Mr Watkins and Magee sitting together at a table inside the Standing Order. The defendant reaches into a jacket pocket, pulls out the knife, shows it to the victim and then stabs him to the neck with it while holding the back of his head before walking away. Mr Watkins, who was wearing a scarf, then removes it and the wound can be seen. Mr Ashton said: "Mr Magee coolly and calmly leaves, the crown say this was an unprovoked and premeditated act.” The trial continues. We send out the biggest stories in an email every day.
