Detroit Free Press After being stranded in the Detroit River,&nbsp;after run-ins with&nbsp;coyotes and &nbsp;suffering frostbite on his&nbsp;paw pads and scrotum, a dog's harrowing survival story has&nbsp;a happy ending.&nbsp;Alfonso, the dog who barely escaped death, will now go home with the man who saved him.On Feb. 20, Jude Mead of&nbsp;J&amp;J Marine in Windsor, Ontario, saved Alfonso after he ended up stranded on a Detroit River island.&nbsp;Mead and his team were&nbsp;able to get on an airboat, which&nbsp;the chemical company BASF Corp. allowed them to use.Woodhaven Animal Hospital staff cared for Alfonso, whom they dubbed Miracle,&nbsp;after his international rescue, giving updates on their&nbsp;Facebook page about his recovery.&nbsp;"We heard some of the most beautiful stories from so many people as to why they wanted to give him a home,"&nbsp;Friends of the River Rouge Animal Shelter said&nbsp;in a .&nbsp;"But in the end, and after a VERY CAREFUL, stringent, and thorough application process, which included a home visit as well (thank you to our Canadian friend Mary) it was decided that the man who saved Miracle was the very best fit for him."The&nbsp;vet hospital said Alfonso's scrotum was removed due to frostbite, and he had hip surgery for&nbsp;hip dysplasia. Vets implanted stem cells into his joints to prevent pain and&nbsp;“the horrible crippling bone deformity” that occurs with dysplasia.&nbsp;More:More:The dog entered the vet hospital as a frostbitten matted ball of fur. He&nbsp;defied the odds and survived the elements. Now, his story finally has a happy ending.&nbsp;"We are all so grateful for this happily ever after ending to this AMAZING story," the vet hospital said.
